Trying Out Social Networking

I have read alot about social networks, all the pros and cons. I am not sold but it does seem to work. I am not sure why? Most of these sites like Twitter and Squidoo remind me of the early 1990’s when FFA pages and link farms were the rage. Why are these sites considered any different? I don’t see the value in them. Most are spam or spam that is trying to look like content?
